La escribió entre 1929 y 1930, durante su estancia en Nueva York y Cuba, en un periodo de gran experimentación artística. Es una obra vanguardista y surrealista que rompe con el teatro convencional, abordando temas como la homosexualidad y la represión social. Edición a partir del único manuscrito que existe de El Público, presumiblemente, inconcluso e incompleto. Se estrenó en 1986, en Milán, bajo la dirección de Lluís Pasqual.
