Al igual que Arthur, que desciende a la bodega del ballenero, el autor se adentra en los rincones del alma humana, donde habitan los deseos inconfesables, que en el caso de Poe tienen que ver con el entierro en vida, la crueldad, la violencia hacia los otros y hacia uno mismo, el hambre, la sed, el canibalismo, el odio y la muerte.
