Este libro estudia siete viviendas unifamiliares, no sólo por considerar dicha tipología arquitectónica como la más apropiada, sino porque es en ella donde más radicalmente han experimentado y desarrollado sus ideas y formas construcitvas los arquitectos de la modernidad. La elección de estas viviendas, proyectadas entre 1907 y 1950, no pretende reconstruir una cierta historia de la arquitectura moderna, sino evidenciar las diferentes claves que permiten definir la nueva caja, una caja de aire que ha sustituido al modelo de la cabaña antigua. Las viviendas analizadas no representan las obras más representativas de sus autores, pero sí la manifestación del momento más programático de diferentes arquitecturas y modos de habitar.
