  • Tras la invasión de Francia por parte de Alemania, en junio de 1940, la Comisión de Rescate de Emergencia, una organización de ayuda privada estadounidense, envió al periodista Varian Fry (1907-1967) a Francia para auxiliar a refugiados antinazis que corrían peligro de ser arrestados por la Gestapo. En Marsella, la red de colaboradores de Fry falsificaba documentos y creaba rutas de escape clandestinas. Fry ofreció ayuda a refugiados antifascistas, tanto judíos como los que no lo eran, bajo amenaza de ser extraditado a la Alemania nazi en virtud del Artículo 19 del armisticio franco-alemán y su cláusula «ENTREGAR CUANDO SE LE SOLICITE...».
