Zola se sirve del protagonista, Pierre Froment, para mostrarnos las múltiples facetas de Roma, ciudad del arte, laberinto de intrigas, de odios y de ambiciones de toda índole, mundo en el que impera lo venal y la pompa, habitado desde hace siglos por dos sociedades que conviven juntas, el mundo blanco y el mundo negro. Zola utilizó para documentarse el diario de su estancia en Roma en 1894, unos cuatrocientos folios de anotaciones recogidas día a día, y las más de mil páginas de apuntes sobre la ciudad, extraídas de unos trescientos volúmenes sobre Italia y el Papado. Todo ello otorga a la novela un sello de innegable autenticidad.
