  • En 1978 se publicó la tesis doctoral de Guillermo Carnero, Los orígenes del Romanticismo reaccionario español: el matrimonio Böhl de Faber. Estaba basada en una copiosa documentación hoy inaccesible o desaparecida en buena parte, y que aquí se ofrece en su integridad, completa y sobriamente anotada. El debate del que procede tuvo lugar en su mayor parte durante el Sexenio Absolutista (1814 a 1820), en el seno del tránsito español desde el Antiguo Régimen al liberalismo, y de una construcción ideológica de la nacionalidad española fundamentada en su Historia y su literatura, singularmente el teatro del Siglo de Oro. De ese debate arrancan tanto nuestro Romanticismo histórico como el mito y el modelo de un supuesto casticismo conservador inherentemente español.
