Tras diversas vicisitudes, en 1516 se proclamó rey de Castilla Carlos de Gante, hijo de Juana y Felipe, nieto de Isabel y Fernando. El hecho de que el nuevo rey apenas conociera el idioma, que se rodeara de consejeros extranjeros y que exigiera grandes dispendios para sus intereses centroeuropeos, fueron algunos de los motivos que dieron lugar al descontento en amplios sectores de la sociedad castellana, dando lugar a la que sería conocida como Guerra de las Comunidades de Castilla, cuyo punto culminante se produjo el 23 de abril de 1521 en las cercanías de la población vallisoletana de Villalar..
