  • Denise Affonço trabajaba en la embajada francesa en Phnom Penh, capital de Camboya, cuando los jemeres rojos tomaron el poder en 1975. Fue deportada al campo como la mayoría de habitantes de las ciudades camboyanas, el régimen instauró un estado agrícola en el que todos debían trabajar la tierra. En los cuatro años de dictadura de los jemeres rojos la población tuvo que soportar hambrunas, enfermedades y ejecuciones sistemáticas. Murió una cuarta parte de los habitantes del país, cerca de dos millones de personas.
