Además, desde una perspectiva sociolingüística se comprobará cómo inciden factores como el sexo, la edad o el nivel de instrucción en la producción de las variantes fonéticas en la localidad, lo cual permitirá conocer cuál es la configuración lingüística de Mérida en el siglo XXI. Por último, y desde un punto de vista contrastivo, este trabajo se plantea como una actualización de los estudios sobre el habla de Mérida y sus cercanías, una investigación que Alonso Zamora Vicente realizó en los años cuarenta del siglo pasado sobre esta área lingüística. This book-length study Estudio sociolingüístico de la fonética de Mérida (Badajoz) offers an examination of linguistic variation in Mérida, the capital city of Extremadura, from a synchronic perspective. It explores a number of cases related to the pronunciation of plosive /-s/, intervocalic /-d-/ or liquid and dental sounds in end position. Furthermore, other elements such as gender, age or education will be examined from a sociolinguistic approach in order to determine how they may affect local phonetic variants. This will enable us to know the linguistic defining features of twenty-first century Mérida. Lastly, this research intends to update –from a contrastive point of view- the speech of Mérida and neighboring locations. This kind of research had already been started by Prof. Alonso Zamora Vicente in the 1940s.
