  • En la peripecia de Jude Fawley –en el abandono de su mujer, en su renuncia forzosa a seguir estudios universitarios, en la relación ilícita, tortuosa y vagabunda que emprende con su prima Sue-, Thomas Hardy quiso basar «una fábula trágica» con el propósito de «mostrar que, como dice Diderot, la ley civil debería ser solo el enunciado de una ley natural». Sin embargo, esta personal ilustración del conflicto entre la ley y el instinto fue acogida con tanta saña y escándalo por sus contemporáneos que un obispo hasta llegó a quemarla públicamente. Jude el oscuro (1895) fue la primera novela que se atrevió a hablar a su época, por extenso y sin tapujos, de sexo, matrimonio y religión.
