El libro hace un recorrido completo por la antropología occidental (griegos, ilustrados, teología, ciencia) desembocando en una lectura dinamicista de la evolución del cosmos y de la especie humana. Pedro Laín muestra las limitaciones del pensamiento ortodoxo, tanto cristiano como laico, señalando el espacio común que existe para unas creencias razonables.
