James Burney (1750-1821) fue oficial de la Marina Británica y escritor. A la muy temprana edad de diez años fue enviado a trabajar como sirviente personal de un capitán del navío "Princess Amelia". En 1772 acompañó al capitán Cook en su segundo viaje de descubrimiento de los mares del sur. A su regreso a Inglaterra, en 1774, sirvió de intérprete a "Omai", el primer tahitiano que visitó la Gran Bretaña. También acompañó al capitán Cook en su tercer viaje, al final del cual, debido a la muerte de su inmediato superior, el capitán Charles Clerke, fue ascendido a comandante del "Discovery". Como escritor se le deben, entre otras, las siguientes obras: With Captain James Cook in the Antartical Pacific (1772-1773), A Voyage to the South Sea in HMS Bounty (1792), A Chronological History of the Discoveries in the South Sea or Pacific Ocean, 5 vols. (1803-1817), A Treatise on the Game of Whist (1821) y la presente A History of the Buccaneers of América (1816), obra ya clásica, numerosas veces reeditada en el ámbito anglosajón y ahora por vez primera vertida al castellano por Victoria León. Burney fue un hombre sociable y tuvo muchos amigos literatos, entre los que cabe destacar a Samuel Johnson, Charles Lamb (el autor de los Cuentos de Shakespeare) y William Hazlitt.
