  • Until now, news of the Catalan-Aragonese conquest of Mallorca has come from the victors, except for some miscellaneous fragments. This book bridges this enormous gap. Its author, Ibn Amira Al-Mahzumi (1186-1269), chronicles in detail the disaster from the Muslim point of view. The manuscript in Arabic, which was only known of through distant references, was discovered in a private library in Tinduf. Muhammad ben Ma’mar has made the first transcription, annotation and edition of the manuscript and professors Guillem Rosselló Bordoy and Nicolau Roser Nebot have translated it into Catalan on the basis of this commendable work; they have also added their own studies and complementary annotations. Thus, we are offering the first translation of a text that now indispensably completes our view of the history of Mallorca circa 1229 and some historiographic materials that are to be used to re-evaluate the waning years of Muslim rule in the Balearics and the process of the Christian conquest.
