STEPHEN SPENDER (1909–1995) fue uno de los escritores más importantes de la generación de la década de los treinta en Gran Bretaña. Pasó algún tiempo en la Alemania de la República de Weimar que su amigo Ishwer-wood retrataría en Goodbye to Berlin, dirigió junto con Cyril Connolly la prestigiosa revista Horizon y durante más de treinta años fue uno de los amigos literarios más cercanos de Elioty de Auden. Publicó teatro (Trial of a Judge, Mary Stuart, The Oedipus Trilogy), novela (The Backward Son, The Burning Cactus, Engaged in Writing), ensayo (The Destructive Element, Forward from Liberalism, Life and the Poet, European Witness, The Creative Element, The Making of a Poem, The Struggle of the Modern, The Year of the Young Rebels, The Thirties and After), la autobiografía World within a World y ocho libros de versos. Entre estos últimos se encuentra The Still Centre, en el que incluyó varios poemas sobre sus experiencias en la España de la guerra civil. El presente volumen contiene esos poemas, junto con otros que Spender recogió en una sección dedicada a España en sus Collected Poems de 1985.
