Tal sería el resumen de los tres ensayos fundamentales de Emmanuel Lévinas aquí reunidos: «La realidad y su sombra» (1948), «Libertad y mandato» (1953) y «Trascendencia y altura» (1962). Sombra, expresión y orden denuncian el totalitarismo de las formas y el monopolio de las categorías. Lévinas lanza un reto aún no recogido por la crítica del arte clásico: el orden de las formas traiciona el futuro que promete y se repite incesante sin trascendencia de llamada fuera de sí mismo. En el rostro de la expresión se abre entonces una grieta por la que reluce un mandato de altura: dar a la obra, y al hombre, el tiempo que merece. A la realidad la instiga una sombra que se expresa ordenándonos crear y descubrir la vida que las formas ocultan. Tal es el cometido de la crítica creadora y filosófica, en deuda aún con el reto de Lévinas.
