  • Junto a un lago hundido en un pueblo del sur de Munich, el narrador trata de concebir una realidad salvadora para la cual el lenguaje, siempre fragmentado, muestra sus límites. En Feldafing tiene lugar el encuentro con un excéntrico filósofo de pueblo que le aconseja que se aleje del lago y que tenga cuidado de no toparse con el «fantasma» del narrador. A Feldafing van llegando cartas: desde Cuba las hilarantes cartas de la madre del narrador. Desde Austria, otro narrador, preocupado por «una raza que vendrá», idea un homúnculo, una suerte de golem producto del «trópico y la nieve». Mientras, el viejo filósofo cuenta o simula que cuenta la historia de su también grotesco y absurdo hermano.
