La exposición "Runge in seiner Zeit", que se celebró en la Kunsthalle de Hamburgo en 1977 y 1978, dentro de la serie "Kunst am 1800, fue punto de partida de un debate que no ha hecho más que crecer. Con aquella exposición y con esa serie, Werner Hofmann, su organizador –y editor de este libro–, ofrecía una nueva imagen del arte europeo en torno a 1800 y de los orígenes de la modernidad.
