  • En 1668, un grupo de jesuitas españoles, dirigidos por el burgalés Diego Luis de San Vitores (1627-1672), iniciaron la evangelización de las islas de los Ladrones (luego, islas Marianas), contando con el apoyo financiero de la Monarquía Hispánica de Felipe IV. El contacto entre los religiosos españoles y los indígenas chamorri constituye un caso especialmente relevante, ya que se trata de una evangelización tardía y violenta que tuvo lugar en los confines del imperio hispánico. En aquellas lejanas islas del Pacífico muchos misioneros jesuitas, como el padre andaluz Luis de Medina (1637-1670), se convirtieron en mártires del catolicismo tridentino.
