Arrel de la llei de 1850 contra els esclaus que escapaven a un Estat lliure, Harriet B. Stowe va escriure «La cabana de l’oncle Tom», publicada per fascicles entre 1851 i 1852, i com a llibre l'any 1852, que defensava posar fi a les lleis injustes i acabar amb l'esclavitud.
