  • Esta publicación surge de una iniciativa del College of Architecture del Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) y del Premio Mies Crown Hall de las Américas (MCHAP), un galardón lanzado por esta institución en 2013 con el objetivo de poner en valor la arquitectura del continente americano. Lejos de ser un catálogo de premio de arquitectura al uso, el libro y el premio sirven como punto de partida para reflexionar sobre diversos temas de la arquitectura actual. Las siete obras premiadas y finalistas (Herzog & de Meuron, Steven Holl, Cristián Undurraga, OMA + REX, Smiljan Radic, Rafael Iglesia y Álvaro Siza) sirven como hilo conductor para enlazar una serie de ensayos visuales y textos que abordan algunos de los temas fundamentales que afectan al territorio, la arquitectura y la cultura americanos: movilidad e infraestructuras, tentativas privadas y públicas, almacenamiento enciclopédico, cajas de herramientas, culto y territorio, encuentros y, finalmente, densidades. El libro constituye, en definitiva, un compendio de materiales diversos, (algunos de ellos escritos expresamente para esta edición y otros de ellos, ya clásicos, recuperados para esta ocasión) que trata de profundizar y abrir nuevas vías en el debate arquitectónico actual.
