Esto implica el ejercicio de la libertad humana, incluyendo el momento dramático de Getsemaní. Sin embargo, según Ratzinger, en Getsemaní se daría una única voluntad personal (de la hipóstasis o persona), y una única libertad personal. Jesucristo, el Verbo encarnado, no ejercería entonces una libertad humana, sino solamente divina. La postura de Ratzinger se somete a crítica, en todos sus pliegues. Se muestran notables divergencias y contradicciones con respecto a Constantinopla III y a Máximo el Confesor, a quienes dice seguir. Se aborda la concepción de la Encarnación y el puesto de la humanidad de Jesucristo en la salvación.
