The war in Ukraine, amidst a global climate of uncertainty and confrontation, has led to a dangerous revival of “nuclear weapons rhetorics”. The time is ripe for a critical review of the basic concepts of the international nuclear nonproliferation regime, a pillar of multilateralism and the ultimate guarantee of global peace and stability. This set of rules and norms has been immersed
in longstanding paralysis, and it is therefore in urgent need of reforms and updating. This article explores the origins and current situation of the nuclear nonproliferation regime. It also hints at some avenues that could help preserving it against the backdrop of a highly volatile global context.
