Hal Foster debió de ser consciente de que tarde o temprano tendría que dejar que sus personajes vivieran más allá de su vida.
Al menos tres dibujantes probaron suerte para sustituir al maestro: Gray Morrow, John Cullen Murphy y Wally Wood. Anciano y todo, Foster siguió al frente de la serie en un segundo plano, escribiendo las historias y abocetando las páginas que Murphy, el elegido, siguió más o menos fielmente, hasta su retiro definitivo en 1980.
