  • Por primera vez se ofrece en este libro un balance de la vida y la obra de Pedro de Villafranca y Malagón (h. 1615–1684), cuya inigualable maestría en el manejo del buril fue reconocida con su nombramiento en 1654 como grabador del rey, cargo que nadie más que él ocupó en tiempos de Felipe IV. Sus retratos guardan una estrecha relación con los de Velázquez, pues muestran la misma habilidad por parte del artista para captar el carácter de sus modelos. Al margen de las efigies del monarca y su familia, Villafranca realizó más de trescientos grabados –sobre todo ilustraciones para libros–, pero trabajó además como pintor, restaurador de obras de arte, tasador y responsable de programas decorativos.
