  • El testimonio de Schlayer (publicado originalmente en 1938 en Alemania) no es del todo imparcial pues sin duda era un hombre de formación conservadora y simpatizaba con las derechas de la época, pero sí resulta en lo fundamental verosímil e incluso verídico. A sus sesenta y tres años, y siendo extranjero, diplomático y alemán, nacionalidad ésta de la que en especial desconfiaban las autoridades republicanas por conocidos y muy razonables motivos, no era del todo ni previsible ni razonable que alguien como Schlayer se implicara de forma libre y voluntaria en una feroz guerra entre españoles, desatada por un levantamiento militar contra el gobierno legítimo y que estaba siendo protagonizada, sobre todo, por los más jóvenes de ambos mandos.
