  • En el año 1580, inmediatamente después de que se publicara la primera edición de los Ensayos en Burdeos, Montaigne abandonó su castillo y viajó durante un año entero por Alemania y Suiza hasta llegar a Italia. Doscientos años antes que Goethe, el autor atribuyó a su precursor grand tour un papel determinante en su formación personal: le permitió ampliar sus conocimientos de latín e italiano, y le brindó la oportunidad de descubrir lugares y costumbres que sólo conocía a través de la literatura. Pero el manuscrito de su Diario del viaje a Italia sólo fue descubierto y publicado en la década de 1770 antes de perderse durante la Revolución francesa.
