  • <p style="text-align:justify">La carpintería de ribera es el arte de construir embarcaciones de madera. Es una profesión tan antigua como la propia navegación y su evolución ha ido paralela al dominio del mar. Ancestralmente un carpintero de ribera experimentado sabía elaborar y montar todas las piezas de la embarcación, estando capacitado para determinar las formas y medidas más convenientes para la buena navegabilidad, seguridad y rendimiento del barco que construía, y en ocasiones, modificaba las características que se habían establecido al inicio de la construcción, al considerarlas más adecuadas. Contaban con una serie de reglas y plantillas (gálibos) que les eran muy útiles, partían de una medida y sobre ella iban obteniendo las dimensiones del resto de las piezas. Su actividad abarcaba desde la selección de los árboles sobre el terreno hasta el aserrado, la fabricación de las distintas piezas, su ensamblado y la construcción total del casco. Cuando no había calafates disponibles se ocupaban también de la impermeabilización de las juntas (calafateado).</p> <p style="text-align:justify"> </p> <p style="text-align:justify">Synopsis<br /> Shipwrighting is the art of building wooden boats. It is a profession as old as navigation itself and its evolution has been parallel to the mastery of the sea. In the past, an experienced shipwright knew how to make and assemble all the parts of the boat, being able to determine the most suitable shapes and measurements for the good seaworthiness, safety, and performance of the boat he was building. And on occasions, he modified the characteristics that had been established at the beginning of the construction, when he considered them to be more suitable. They had a series of rulers and templates (gauges) that were very useful to them, they started from a measurement and based on it they obtained the dimensions of the rest of the pieces. Their activity ranged from selecting trees in the field to sawing them, manufacturing different parts, assembling them, and building the hull as a whole. When caulkers were not available, they also took care of waterproofing joints (caulking).<br />  </p>
