  • En 1782 se publicó el tomo sobre Géographie Moderne de la Encyclopédie Méthodique, la continuadora de la Encyclopédie de Diderot y D’Alambert. El artículo correspondiente a España lo escribió Nicolas Masson de Morvilliers, un hasta entonces desconocido geógrafo francés. Masson ofrecía a los lectores un repaso —plagado de tópicos— a la situación del país y, casi al final, planteaba la pregunta: «¿Qué se debe a España? Desde hace dos siglos, desde hace cuatro, desde hace seis, ¿qué ha hecho por Europa?». La respuesta venía a decir que «muy poco».
