  • La novela y su elaboración responden al título. Primero se eligió el lugar: una calle real de no más de doscientos metros, que poseía la magia derivada de albergar en ella o en sus lindes inmediatos la catedral, el palacio del obispo, la comisaría, los seminarios mayor y menor, el cementerio, la cárcel y el parque de la ciudad. Después se fijó un intervalo de tiempo canalla y violento, 1935-1947. En tercer lugar se recopilaron las personas distinguidas (originales, extravagantes, neutras, enternecedoras) que el autor ha conocido por el mundo y se domiciliaron en el lugar ya escogido. Por último se le dio cuerda a la vida del escenario elaborado, procurando no interferir en ella. La novela es la narración de una mirada reflexiva y cariñosa al espectáculo que surgió.
