El segundo volumen, Cuando martillo, martillo, recoge las crónicas publicadas a partir de julio de 1943, durante la segunda fase de la guerra, la «guerra ofensiva».;Las crónicas también se ocupan de aspectos de la sociedad y de la vida diaria inglesa.
