Ambientada en el lejano oriente, en las costas del noroeste de la isla de Sumatra, nos cuenta el postrer viaje del capitán Whalley, un viejo lobo de mar que, por amor a su hija, a la que quiere ayudar económicamente, se ve en la obligación de aceptar un peligroso encargo al tiempo que un pesado secreto le atenaza como una soga al cuello. El capitán Whalley, como personaje, está más cerca de Dostoievski o Gorki que de Stevenson o Kipling y no es sino una víctima del destino. Pero tiene mucho de héroe, aunque sea a su pesar.
