Fue ametrallador en el Batallón Mackenzie-Papineau y en la 35.ª División, y participó en operaciones de inteligencia. Cuarenta años después, se encontró con Manuel Álvarez, un niño al que había salvado la vida durante el bombardeo de Corbera d’Ebre (Tarragona) en 1938. El libro de Manuel titulado El soldado alto (1980) le rindió homenaje.
