Aunque estos libros se centran en la introducción de la monarquía en Israel y en sus dos primeros reyes (Saúl y David), constituyen también una gran aportación sobre el profetismo (con Samuel y Natán) y el mesianismo (promesa dinástica a David). Desde el punto de vista literario, abundan los personajes secundarios, algunos tratados con gran maestría, y se concede mucha importancia a sus reacciones y sentimientos. Merecen especial atención las abundantes metáforas, así como los espléndidos discursos e invectivas, y las descripciones tan vivas, cinematográficas, que encontramos a lo largo del relato (combate de David y Goliat). En muchos momentos tenemos la impresión de encontrarnos ante una espléndida novela histórica, más novela que historia.
