  • A finales del siglo IV a. C. Epicuro fundó una escuela filosófica del todo opuesta al idealismo platónico imperante. Desde una perspectiva mucho más empírica y natural, su doctrina reivindicó el papel de los sentidos (única fuente de sabiduría posible) y la búsqueda del placer para alcanzar la felicidad (único objetivo final). Este hedonismo, sin embargo, debía acompañarse de cierta ética, capaz de distinguir placeres buenos (o «naturales», como comer o dormir) y malos (o innecesarios y vanos, como beber sin sed o buscar la lujuria). De aquí la necesidad de la filosofía, cuya práctica defendió Epicuro durante toda la vida: «porque para alcanzar la salud del alma, nunca se es ni demasiado viejo ni demasiado joven».
