Afincado en París desde 1955, Fernando Arrabal es «el único superviviente de los cuatro avatares de la modernidad» [dadaísmo, surrealismo, pánico y patafísica], como lo describió el mítico crítico teatral de The New York Times, Mel Gussow. A los diez años fue Premio Nacional de «superdotados». Estrenó su primera obra, Pic-Nic (1952), que aún se representa, en un programa junto a Bertolt Brecht. Ha vivido de primera mano el surrealismo y ha sido testigo de los berrinches de André Breton, de los amores de Paul Eluard o de la genialidad de Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, Jim Morrison, Andy Warhol, Jorge Luis Borges, Luis Buñuel o Emil Cioran. Con Marcel Duchamp, Tristan Tzara y Samuel Beckett ha pasado horas y horas jugando al ajedrez, y ha sido amigo íntimo de Milan Kundera, Michel Houellebecq, Antonio Garrigues Walker, Albert Serra o Alejandro Jodorowsky, con quien fundó junto a Roland Topor el Movimiento Pánico .
